General discussion

What is the point of supporting the two profiles : HDLC and ip with wrapper in the smart meter , I think the hdlc profile is enough and use external modem to communicat with ip network ?

Hi,

Hi,

If there is an internal modem on the meter WRAPPER is normally used, but if you are using an external modem they use HDLC.

Thank You for your response .

Thank You for your response .
we can't use hdlc profil with an internal modem ? I think there are some meters with internal modem but ip wrapper not supported . What do You think about that . Thanks in advance

Hi,

Hi,

Yes, you can use it, but DLMS meters are usually using WRAPPER when communicating over TCP/IP. There are a few older meters that are using HDLC with TCP/IP.

ah okey

ah okey

So the system AMM or the software must support the same profil configured on the meter side to communicate with each other ?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Hi,

Yes, both client and server must support the same profile.

thanks M. Mikko

I want to know also why it is preferably to communicate with wrapper profil in the case of the integrated modem ?

Hi,

Hi,

I believe you can use it, but WRAPPER is lighter than HDLC and for that reason, it's used in TCP/IP connections. There is no checksum, etc in WRAPPER that are in TCP/IP layer.

Payload is bigger when using WRAPPER.

Hi

Hi

You want to say :" Payload is bigger when using HDLC " ?

Hi,

Hi,

No, the payload is bigger in WRAPPER than HDLC. In HDLC there are extra bytes that decrease the payload.

So in this case , It s better

So in this case , It s better to communicate with HDLC profile ?

Hi,

Hi,

It's not possible to say because I don't know what kind of meter you are making.
If you communicate with WRAPPER, you need to send fewer packets to transfer all the data.

I m talking generaly about

I m talking generaly about any meter , if the playload is bigger in wrapper than hdlc , so ii think t s better to communicate with hdlc profil but logicaly there is some useful informations with wrapper , is that true ?

Hi,

Hi,

The same information is in HDLC and WRAPPER framing. If you are using WRAPPER you can send fewer frames when communicating with TCP/IP.

Mikko
