I have been easily been able to send data using the library using VB NET.
Can I set an event handler to read the data if the serial port receives data?
How do I read the data?

Read this link. It describes how to send data asynchronously or synchronously. When data is read synchronously you need to set the byte count or the End Of Packet charachter.
