I am trying to understand how the Kamstrup OMNIPOWER 8860 Single Phase Smart meter communicates with Home Area Networks.
As I understand it, there are various possible Communications modules which can be used with the 8860.
There seems to be 2 distinct communications interfaces:
1) one to supply the Grid operator with data
2) one to supply the Home Area Network with data, i.e to a consumers smartphone or tablet.
Is my understanding correct?
Also is the second interface (HAN) provided over Zigbee ? And if so can I read the meter data, by scanning for the Zigbee signal and somehow decoding it?
You can read your meter using an optical probe that you can join to the meter. There is a window on the left side of the meter where you can connect the optical probe.
With some meters, you can connect using the serial port interface. There is a hatch in the upper part of the meter. If it's not sealed and you can open it there might be an external communication interface module. Sometimes it's empty.
It's possible that HAN device is inside of the hatch, but I don't know if it's using Zigbee. If you have a Zigbee receiver you can easily check if there are Zigbee devices nearby.
would like to continue this diiscussion. what HAN topology? if I want to command a lamp to turn on/off, does the command go through the meter or directly to device?
